Praise and Thanksgiving

Luke 22:24–27 — A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

What a Savior we have! We praise you, Father, that in so many ways Jesus broke the mold. He broke the mold into which our sin had cast us. He broke the mold of pride and selfishness by living and dying for others, in true humility. He broke the mold of earthly leadership by leading from a place of servanthood. He broke the mold of the warrior king by laying down his life as the price to redeem his people. Thank you, Lord, that you are not like us, because then you could never have saved us! Thank you that you have saved us so that we might be made like you – please continue the work of re-creating us in your image even this morning – make us to be humble servants like our Savior!

Pride, selfishness, malice, greed, anger, hatred, bitterness, envy, jealousy are just some of the sins at the core of our old nature and these would have destroyed us but for Jesus. They are destroying billions of lost souls around the world even today, Lord. You take no delight in the death of the wicked, so please hear as we pray this morning for your kingdom to come in power wherever the Gospel is proclaimed!

Global Topics

Forgive us that we have such small ambitions when we pray for this world, given who you are and given the power of the Gospel to turn the world upside down! Give us faith to pray that we may see the days your Word speaks about, when the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea! Send revival Lord, and help us to give up our small ambitions that center on us and are driven by our small faith. Give us grace to pray in accordance with your character, your Gospel and your promises!

National Topics

Father, grant that we may be governed by men like David – men after your own heart – and not by men like Saul, governing in pride and fear and disobedience to you. You tell us that kings’ hearts are like streams in your hands, and that you turn them wherever you will – please turn them towards yourself in this land for your glory!

Fellowship Topics

We have so much to praise you for as a fellowship! You have been generous and kind and good to us and have blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. The world knows nothing of this true life except what they see in us as we live out the gospel of love and grace. As they look at us, may it not be like looking in a mirror and seeing people who are still in love with the world and the things of the world. Let them see something radically different – the absence of pride and selfishness and instead the humble servanthood of Jesus! Use your Word this morning through Jamie to make that difference between us and the world more emphatic than it was before we came here, and to give us a heart for the lost like Christ’s!
