|Father God, in a world wrought with division, violence, corruption, crookedness, oppression, exploitation, and abuse, we ask that you will spur us on toward angry love and that the stoked flame of resolve will cause us to contend for justice… real justice, at all levels, from every side. From the margins to the elite, from the oppressed to the free and from the poor to the rich we seek justice that reveals the goodness and greatness of You, our Great and Merciful God. Grant us clarity as we seek to discern between good and evil. Help us to see the wickedness of injustice, all injustice, and make us uncomfortable so that we would be compelled to cry out for the vindication of the innocent and the punishment of the guilty.|
|Guard us against hopelessness and despair as the specter of evil comes into sharp focus. May the reality of what is bad turn our attention to what is good and peaceable. You are at work, Your goodness has not faded. Your love has not dimmed. Protect us all from an enemy that wants us to believe that what is good is evil and what is evil is good. Guard our hearts as we seek Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Keep us from the temptation and error of seeking our own kingdom and our own righteousness, in Your name.|
|We desire justice to replace injustice and we desire grace to replace judgement and we desire empathy to replace hostility.
We, Your children, desire confidence. Confidence born from wisdom that comes from above. Confidence that is rooted in right understanding of your word. Confidence in Your truth that is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Make us clear about what we teach, gentle in our rebuke, effective in our correcting and adept at righteousness so we can train others in it.
|Do not allow us to grow comfortable with sin and injustice but fill us with your righteousness so that we will take up the cause of those who are shoved to the margins of this world. Let us lean into You, the one who defends the cause of the poor of the people, the One who gives deliverance to the children of the needy, the one who crushes the oppressor! (Ps. 72:4). “O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve!” (Ps. 94:1–2).
We are tasting, in small measure, Jesus’ experience as He sweat drops of blood in the garden. Like Christ, we are upset, uneasy.. we grieve. But we don’t grieve as a people without hope. Our hope is built on nothing less than the blood and righteousness of Your Son, Jesus the Christ.
|Because of You, in our distress we are hopeful. Injustice exists in our country because sin exists in our country and You came to crush that sin. Hallelujah, what a savior!
You spark the light of our hope as we are reminded that in the darkest hours of history—when it seemed like evil had triumphed—Your suffering won redemption and vanquished evil.
Your grace on the cross brings hope to the mistreated, for while evil plagues the earth, Your victory ensures that justice will prevail.
Show us Your glory, humble us in the face of Your greatness, strengthen us by Your steadfast goodness and soak us in Your grace. In the great and wondrous name of Jesus we pray,
