Grace Church AZ Prayer for Sunday, August 30, 2020

Praise and Thanksgiving

Psalm 8:1–5, 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor… 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Lord open our hearts to Your holiness and our eyes to Your glory. Shift our focus from ourselves and grant us humility and peace and rest in the midst of heartache and violence across the world. You are sure and You are good. Evil does not overpower You. You still the enemy and the avenger. Grant us belief and understanding – You Lord, our Lord are majestic and Your glory fills the earth.

Global Topics

With Your mighty power and steadfastness goodness in mind we pray on behalf of our brothers and sisters in northern Nigeria who are the target of hate and evil. As the tragic murders of Nigerian Christians rise, seemingly without end, we ask that you would show Yourself as the comforter to the families who have lost loved ones to violence and hate. Give them solace in the reality that, in death, their family members are in awe as they bask in Your peace and love even now.

As we struggle with the effects of COVID-19 ourselves, we are reminded that across the globe the pandemic is having a devastating impact on the lives of many poor Christians. We know that in many countries hostility toward Your people is overt and our fellow believers are unable to work and public support is being withheld because of their faith. We hear of our brothers in China and Nigeria and Algeria and Egypt and Pakistan, among others, who struggle in the face of persecution. Hear their cries, hear our cries on their behalf, and bring them relief. Use their plight to strengthen their dependence on You. Use their circumstances and unwavering faith to spur us on toward action and gratitude. Make us know that You are gloriously sovereign in our suffering.

National Topics

We survey the unrest in our own country and we are tempted to lose heart. Guard us from ourselves. Hold us firm and secure. Make us wise and give us peace. Bring justice to our land. Teach us to identify what is just and what is not. Let us experience the light of Your wisdom that shines into the darkness of sin and chaos. Cause us, Your people, to bear Your image and represent Your glory for our joy and the good of our nation. As we prosper in faithful, winsome obedience bless those around us and open their eyes to Your salvation.

Merciful Counselor, we grieve with suffering communities who are struggling to recover from devastation, both man made and natural. Speed the restoration of cities and communities and families. Give them strength and perseverance while they rebuild their homes and livelihoods. Give them refuge in Your mighty hand so that their rebuilding will be built on the firm foundation of life in You.

Fellowship Topics

Here at home, let us not grow weary of doing good. Put us in order and unite us as we resist the temptation to be conformed to the pattern of this world. Transform us, renew our minds. Build us up so that Grace Church, in a time of public division, might prove the joy of unity that was achieved by Christ’s death on the cross.

Help us as elders who oversee your church. May we wholeheartedly give our attention to prayer and ministry of the word. Give us shepherds' hearts and help us to prove faithful with the things you have entrusted to us. Keep us open and honest before You and help us to represent the truth plainly.

We lift up men and women in our body who serve faithfully in so many ways. May they walk worthy of respect with sincere hearts. Keep them from indulgence and greed. Help them keep hold of truth. May they keep short accounts with You so that their conscience is clear. Bless their households with peace and respect. Fill them with Your Spirit and let them operate in wisdom as they carry out their responsibilities.

Clothe Your people in Your righteousness so that we may live worthy of Your call on our lives. Give us a vision of what it means to be Your people in Your Kingdom. Grant us intimacy, empathy and love for one another. Instruct us in the skill of loving You and each other. Amaze us with the result.

Settle our souls in humility and awe, give us delight as we learn to trust You, the One whose name is majestic in all the earth. Amen
