Extraordinarily Ordinary

Pastor Jamie Self - 2/16/2026

This sermon from Luke 6:12–16 presents Jesus praying through the night and intentionally appointing twelve ordinary men as apostles to advance God’s kingdom mission. The message traces the biblical storyline from Genesis, Babel, Abraham, Israel, and the prophets to Revelation 7, showing how God gathers scattered nations and restores order through Christ and His church. The appointment of the apostles establishes the foundation of the church, calling believers today to live as ordinary people with an extraordinary mission of disciple-making, kingdom order, and gospel witness among all nations .

Weekly Reflection

““Jesus deliberately chose twelve ordinary men and entrusted them with an extraordinary mission.””
Luke slows the story down to show us something strategic. Before the Sermon on the Plain, before the continued proclamation of the kingdom, Jesus prays all night and appoints twelve apostles. This moment connects the arc from Babel’s scattering to Revelation’s gathering. The King establishes His church through ordinary people, and He sends them into the world to order life for His glory. We often imagine mission as something distant, dramatic, or reserved for a few. This passage expands our imagination. The same King who chose fishermen and tax collectors now gathers His church, builds it on the apostolic foundation, and sends ordinary believers into homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Every act of faithful obedience participates in His global purpose of gathering worshipers from every nation.
