The Cornerstone of Worship
Pastor Jon Moorhead - 10/4/2026
In this sermon from Luke 19:45-20:18, Pastor Jon Moorhead follows Jesus into the temple courts, where He drives out those who turned God's house of prayer into a den of robbers and exposes a man-centered religion that tries to control God for selfish gain. Drawing on Jeremiah 7, Isaiah 5, 8, and 28, Daniel 2, and Psalm 118, he shows how the parable of the wicked tenants reveals the rebellion of those who refused God's beloved Son, and how the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone: a sanctuary for all who fear the Lord and a stone of stumbling for all who try to climb into God's presence by their own righteousness. The good news is that the beloved Son was thrown out of the vineyard so that we could be brought in, and the cornerstone opens God's house of worship to all who will believe.
Weekly Reflection
“The cornerstone is not something that we fit into our life. He is someone that we build our entire life around.”
t is possible to show up every Sunday and still treat God's house as a hideout. We lean on our attendance, our good habits, or our reputation and quietly hope it earns us a little extra favor with God. Jesus overturns that kind of religion, because He is the righteous One who opens the gate and lets in all who believe. So where are you still trying to climb in on your own righteousness instead of resting on the stone God has laid?

This Week’s Challenge:
What fruit am I holding back from God because I am afraid? Write it on a card and put it where you'll see it each morning. Each day this week, pray over it by name: "This belongs to You, Lord. Christ is my righteousness." Before Sunday, tell one person in your Gospel Community what you're surrendering and ask them to pray for you.
