What's in a Name
Pastor Jamie Self - 10/18/2026
In Luke 20:45–21:38, Jesus, just revealed as the Lord seated at the Father’s right hand, contrasts the scribes who perform religion for show while devouring widows’ houses with a poor widow who gives all she has in response to God’s rightful claim on her life. Turning to the coming destruction of the temple, Jesus warns his disciples against counterfeits who come in his name with false timelines, and tells them that persecution, betrayal, and hatred for his name’s sake will become opportunities to bear witness, with Spirit-given words and the promise that not a hair of their heads will perish. Because Christ has put his name on his people and redeemed them, believers are called to endure faithfully, gather in his name, refuse a victim mindset, and live in watchful hope, straightening up and raising their heads as they await the Son of Man coming with power and great glory.
Weekly Reflection
“If he claims you, he puts his name on you, you're going to stand up. You're going to put your head up because he has redeemed you.”
It is easy to carry the name of Jesus when life is going well. The harder moments come when a relationship turns cold, the bills pile up, or the week just keeps hitting, and we start saying, "I just can't do this anymore." Jesus never promised that bearing His name would be easy, but He did promise that not a hair of our heads will perish and that He will give us what we need to say when we need to say it. If He has redeemed us and put His name on us, then the trial in front of us is not proof that we are forgotten, it is an opportunity to bear witness, and we can face it with our heads up.

This Week’s Challenge:
Does my life look like Jesus has a claim on me, or do I only wear His name on Sunday? Then look around this Sunday and notice who's not there. Text or call one person from our church family you haven't seen in a while, tell them you miss them, and invite them to sit with you next week.
